Dental Poetry Contest Results

During the National Children's Dental Health Month in February, the Chicago Dental Society (CDS) sponsored a poetry contest to help promote awareness of good oral health. The poems both impressed and amused me. I thought I would share several of these with you, both for their entertainment value as well as the educational message these young people hoped to share:

Hocus pocus! Alakazam!
My smile sparkles wherever I am.
My teeth are clean
My teeth are bright
I brush my teeth
morning and night

Sarrah Maddrell, age 8
Spring avenue school, LaGrange.

Before I show these teeth of mine
I'll brush them, floss them, make them shine.
A dazzling smile for all to see
is something that's important to me.
So I'll keep brushing and flossing as well
to keep my smile looking swell.

Jim Principe, age 11
St. Barbera school, Chicago.

There once was a boy named Kyle,
who believed there's magic in a healthy smile.
He avoided decay
by brushing each day,
and flossing more than once in a while.

Tina Powers-galiardo, age 12
Winston Park Junior High School, Palatine.

According to CDS staff writer, Kathy Dornbos, "We received more than 3700 entries.... The contest was a great way to illustrate student's knowledge of dental health practices. As it turns out, They seem to have a pretty good grasp of the basics".
